A Nuatoma is a leader of an Unkalaki family clan on Roshar. Rock describes them as Horneater equivalent of an Alethi Brightlord. The relatives of a nuatoma are his servants. sa1

The specifics of the title like the method of succession and the areas of responsibility of a nuatoma are mostly unknown so far.

Rock implied in a conversation about his people that there is at least one nuatoma for each of the Horneater Peaks and the different peaks might go to war with each other under the leadership of their respective nuatomas.
A nuatoma is a leader of an Unkalaki clan on Roshar. They are a type of noble, the Horneater equivalent of an Alethi Brightlord.sa1

| The nuatoma, they see our lack of Shards as a great shame. They want these weapons very badly. It is believed that the nuatoma who first obtains a Shardblade would become king, a thing we have not had for many years. No peak would fight another peak where a man held one of the blessed Blades.
It is not clear how an individual becomes nuatoma, although both birth order and heritage are major factors in Unkalaki social standing.sa1sa3 Since all Unkalaki are darkeyed, eye color is not a consideration.sa1 The relatives of a nuatoma act as their guards and servants, often performing multiple jobs.sa1sa3 It is implied that a nuatoma leads each of the Horneater Peaks. The lack of Shards among the Unkalaki is a source of embarrassment for the nuatoma, and many have traveled to Vedenar or Alethkar offering significant financial incentives in exchange for the chance to duel a Shardbearer and win a Shard.sa1sa3 They believe that the first nuatoma to win a Shardblade would gain sufficient power to become the first tana'kai—similar to a kingsa2—in many years. Either the respect for a Shardbearer or the fear of an easy defeat would keep the other peaks from skirmishing with a nuatoma who holds a Shard.sa1

All of the nuatoma who have challenged Alethi Shardbearers have been killed.sa1 Kef'ha, Lunamor's nuatoma, chooses to duel Torol Sadeas, believing that it will be easier to win against someone who only possesses Shardplate first, and then to challenge someone else for their Blade afterwards. He believes that his relatives will simply become servants of House Sadeas if he dies. However, sometime in early 1173, Sadeas kills Kef'ha without a proper duel and then kills some of his family members who protest before seizing their property anyway.sa3 Sadeas does not know what to do with the surviving Horneaters, but he makes soldiers or servants out of most of them. Lunamor briefly serves as his cook, but he puts chull dung in Sadeas' food, earning him an assignment to the bridge crews.sa1

After Cord receives her Shardplate, Lunamor finds it remarkable that their nation's first Shardbearer is not a nuatoma, but a young woman.sa4

Rock's nuatoma left the Peaks together with members of his family to gain Shardplate and Shardblade for his clan. He was killed in a duel with Highprince Torol Sadeas for Sadeas' Shardplate. It is unclear what exactly was offered as stake by the nuatoma, but Rock and the other members of his nuatoma's household became Sadeas' servants (and effectively slaves) after the death of the nuatoma.sa1

Some members of the family clan were most likely left behind on the Peaks and did not follow the nuatoma to Alethkar. Kaladin mentions that Rock had sent for his wife in the Horneater homeland after he gained freedom from slaverysa2 and Rock says that he will make the other members of Bridge Four part of his family after they all chipped in together to buy him a razor blade for shaving.sa1
