Stormlight is a form of Investiture brought by the Highstorms of Roshar.

Appearance and Properties

Gemstones left outside during a highstorm become infused with Stormlight.[1] When Stormlight is not encased within a gemstone, such as when held by a Surgebinder or leaking from damaged Shardplate, it appears as a luminescent white vapor. It also increases the speed at which plants grow.

Nightblood, the sentient sword from Nalthis, the location of the novel Warbreaker, is powered through the use of Breath. Brandon has hinted that Nightblood can also be harnessed through the use of Stormlight, leading us to assume that Breath and Stormlight are similar, if not exactly the same. This can be seen when Szeth uses Nightblood in the battle of Thaylen Field. The sword consumed a great deal of Stormlight from both him and Lift.

Uses

Stormlight can be used to fuel the operation of fabrials or Surgebinding abilities.[expand]

Stormlight is used as a currency in Roshar's Cognitive Realm, with moneychangers in Celebrant storing it in perfect gemstones which never go dun.[2][3] A device is used to transfer stormlight from smaller gemstones into the perfect gemstones, and in exchange one receives credit which can be spent in the city.[3]
