The ardents were the priests of Vorinism.[1] Since the Hierocracy the ardents have been forbidden from participating in politics, they also were not allowed to own anything and were themselves the property of a lighteyes. They were also one of the only groups who did not have to be paid, along with the Parshmen. Even slaves had to be paid in Alethkar. They were also the only people allowed to use the Almighty's other name Elithanathile or He Who Transforms. Many male ardents had shaved heads and long beards, most ardents also wore grey robes.
Ardents were exempt from many aspects of custom in Alethkar, especially any gender-specific customs for example female ardents were not required to cover their safehand, they were allowed to eat both masculine and feminine foods, male ardents could learn to read and they could both pursue masculine and feminine pursuits.
Notable Ardents
- Kabsal A male ardent who lived in Kharbranth[2] and attempted to assassinate Jasnah.[3]
- Geranid A female ardent who lived on a small Reshi island and studied Spren.[4]
- Ashir A male ardent, Geranid's husband, who studied chemistry through cooking.
- Zahel The warrior ardent who teaches Adolin, Renarin and Kaladin swordmanship and how to fend off a shardbearer.[5]
Soulcasting
Ardents were the only people allowed to use Soulcasting and Fabrials, and surrounded this practice with much mystery that Soulcastings were always performed at night and under heavy guard to prevent any other than ardents and high-ranking lighteyes from viewing it so that few outside the ardentia were even aware of how Soulcasting was performed. They were not allowed to use Soulcasters on people.
