The Valley was located in the mountains that divide Emul and Greater Hexi. It was said that The Nightwatcher resided there who is conncted to the Old Magic. Many people, even Alethi nobility went there to seek a boon and a curse from The Nightwatcher.

Well, a group of evil spirits known as the Voidbringers assaulted and captured heaven, casting out God and men. Men took root on Roshar, the world of storms, but the Voidbringers chased them there, trying to push them off of Roshar and into Damnation.

So on Roshar Damnation was the place where those were sent after death who didn't deserve joining the Tranquiline Halls and therewith it was the counterpart to the Tranquiline Halls.

In Vorinism people were to become best in their Glory and Calling for after death one may join the Heralds fighting to reclaim the Tranquiline Halls from the Voidbringers. In Alethkar the highest calling was to be a great warrior for this purpose. But each profession was needed in the Tranquiline Halls, so i.e. farmers and cooks, too.
