There's a WoB, now actually cited here, linking the red haze to a Shard interfering on Scadrial, so restoring with slightly softer language
(Removed section claiming that Harmony says the red mist in Bands of Mourning is Trell. He does not say that. When asked what it is, he says he does not know and does no mention Trell.)
