The effects here are more subtle than they are when mixing Surges on Roshar, but I am convinced that each unique combination also creates something distinctive. Not just two powers, you could say, but two powers … and an effect. This demands further study.

—Khriss.[1]

Resonances[2] are interactions that occur when an individual has access to more than one Invested Art or Surge. The effects produced are not necessarily a combination of the two powers.[3][1] An individual with more than two powers such as a Mistborn or Full Feruchemist may lose this added effect.[4] This is because with so many powers the resonances are not as pronounced.[5]

Surgebinding

All orders of Knights Radiant have access to two Surges[6], and therefore each order has resonances of their own.[3] Known Surgebinding resonances include:

  • Windrunners, such as Kaladin and Teft, have an increased number of squires, more than any other order.[7]
  • Lightweavers, such as Shallan are able to take a "Memory" of anything they see. They can recall this Memory at a later time with perfect accuracy. When they put it to paper as a painting or a sketch the Memory is completely removed from their mind.[8][9] This is similar to the way an Archivist stores memories in their copperminds. There is a limit to how many Memories a Lightweaver could store at the same time.[10] Memories are tied to Spiritual Connection.[11]
  • Skybreakers, such as Szeth, while it is not known what resonance they do have, it has been confirmed that it does not involve telling guilty and innocent people apart.[12]
This page or section deals with theories or speculation.
Please read carefully and note that this is not necessarily canonical.
  • Edgedancers, such as Lift, are suspected of having the ability to communicate especially well as their resonance,[13][14] though Brandon has RAFO'd this.[15]
  • Elsecallers, such as Jasnah, are suspected to have a sort of internal GPS as their resonance. This ability would allow them to determine their exact location as well as detecting in which direction the nearest settlement is.[16] Brandon has not clearly confirmed or denied this.[17]

Metallic Arts

Twinborn, individuals who are both Ferrings and Mistings, also have resonances.[1] examples include:

  • Crashers, such as Wax, a combination of a Coinshot and a Skimmer, have the ability to create a "steel bubble" around themselves which will deflect all metal that comes close to them.[18][19] This ability requires practice and skill to use.[20][18] The steel bubble only affects metals that are affected by iron and steel Allomancy, therefore aluminum objects are unaffected by the bubble.[21]

Trivia

  • Resonances are a manifestation of the way Shards combine.[22]
  • While Hemalurgy will usually not create resonances, it is possible for it to happen.[23]
