He traveled on ''[[Wind's Pleasure|The Wind's Pleasure]]'' with [[Shallan]] and stayed with her as a guide in [[Kharbranth]] until she was apprenticed with [[Jasnah]]. When she went into a bookstore, he ran in, claiming that the owner's competitor had it cheaper. Shallan gets the book for much cheaper than she would have otherwise. He flirts with Shallan often, even though she is a much higher rank than he is. Yalb has a brother.{{book ref|sa2|1}}
