The development of Hoid as a character was a long process, the idea of him predates many later concepts that [[Brandon Sanderson]] had, including that of the Cosmere itself. In terms of characters only Dalinar predates him as an idea, both emerging around when Sanderson was around 15 years old.{{wob ref|5246}} Although he did not start as such Hoid was a DnD character that Brandon played in high school at one stage.{{wob ref|9017}} He appeared in an one of the first stories Sanderson wrote for Dalinar as a court magician.{{wob ref|2868}}
