When [[Raoden]] established [[New Elantris]], Tiil and the approximately fifty other children were placed under the care of [[Matisse]], who teaches them to draw Aons[[Aon]]s. When [[Elantris (city)|Elantris]] is attacked by [[Fjordell]] soldiers, Matisse convinces him and [[Teor]] to help keep the younger children moving and quiet by claiming that, since her father is a soldier, she is as well, and they can be her "subcaptains" if they do what she tells them.{{book ref|thoe}}
