Brandon started writing ''Starsight'' in mid-2018 after completing ''Skyward''.{{wob ref|11073}} Brandon had some difficulty working through the first draft{{wob ref|10963}} but solved these issues and finished writing the book in the fall of 2018.{{wob ref|10856}} It was released about one year after the release of ''Skyward'', on November 26, 2019.
