m (That's a little out-of-world, since what it's really seems to be saying is "the only time the word 'skaa' has been used in the books since the Catacendre"; the word appears in the Words of Founding anyways, so I imagine it does exist in whatever the more common language is, if that's more the point being made)

Those who are not criminals are worked to near death in some situations by their masters. Plantation skaa were especially brutalized and often did not live as long as their city counterparts as they were killed if they were unable to work. Only very skilled skaa were able to have a trade and work as a craftsman, like [[Clubs]], although they were still underpaid and looked down upon by the nobility{{book ref|mb1|6}}.
