When humans first arrived on Roshar from [[Ashyn]] after leaving it inhospitable to human life, the [[singer]]s gave them the land of Shinovar to settle in. Because it is sheltered from highstorms, humans were able to grow the plants and animals they had brought with them there, and these became a defining aspect of the Shin ecology.
 
Over time, humanity grew dissatisfied with the territory they were granted, and chose to violent expand their territoryit, which begun what came to be known as the First Desolation.{{book ref|sa3|113}}
