In an attempt to re-establish diplomatic relations with [[Arelon]], Sarene arrangesarranged a political marriage with [[Raoden|Prince Raoden]]. She meetsmet and getsgot to know Raoden by communicating through letters, and later by [[seon]]. When she arrivesarrived in Arelon, however, she findsfound out that Raoden hashad died of [[Shaod|"disease"]]. A clause in the marriage contract statesstated that the death of either her or Raoden qualifiesqualified as a marriage, so she findsfound herself a widow, and legally the daughter of King [[Iadon| King Iadon]] of Arelon]].{{book ref|Elantris|2}}

She spendsspent the first three months of her "married" life working to block the efforts of a [[gyorn]] named [[Hrathen]] to convert the people to [[Shu-Dereth]] and thus add both Teod and Arelon to the massive [[Fjorden#Fjordell_Empire|Fjordell Empire]]. In addition, she worksworked with Raoden's group of friends to attempt to change Iadon's system of government. She also bringsbrought food to the Elantrians, werewhere she meetsmet Raoden under the Namename Spirit, and teachestaught a group of Arelene noblewomen, including [[Eshen]] and [[Daora]], fencing, in an attempt to give them some agency in the court.{{book ref|Elantris| 17}}

Hrathen eventually getsgot to [[Telrii]], a rich nobleman, and promisespromised to place him on the throne if he convertsconverted to Shu-Dereth. When Iadon commitscommitted suicide, Sarene realizesrealized that the only way to keep Telrii off the throne iswas to combine her fortunes with [[Roial|Roial's]] through marriage.{{book ref|Elantris|35}} On the day of the wedding, however, Hrathen poisonspoisoned her to make her look like she hashad undergone transformation by the Shaod, and she iswas thrown into Elantris.{{book ref| Elantris| 38}} During her time in Elantris, she studied AonDor with Raoden. Together they discovered that AnoDor iswas tied to the geography of Arleon. After five days in Elantris, when the poison wearswore off, she and Raoden realizerealized that she was not truly an Elantrian, and she returnsreturned to [[Kae]].{{book ref|Elantris|36}} Shortly after Sarene left Elantris, Raoden managed to use AonDor by adding a line for the great chasm.{{book ref|elantris|49}}

Sarene met Raoden again, this time in his with AonDor created disguise as the Dula noble "Kaloo".{{book ref|elantris|50}} When King Telrii attacked, Raoden revealed his identity.{{book ref|elantris|53}} After ElondelEondel killed Telrii, Raoden claimed the throne.{{book ref|elantris|54}}

She convincesconvinced the people to accept Raoden as their king even though he iswas an Elantrian,{{book ref|Elantris|56}}, but then the Derethi priests attackattacked Arelon, capturing Sarene, along with the rest of her allies and family in [[Kae]]. She iswas taken to [[Teoras]] by [[Dilaf]], where he attemptsattempted to use her to make King Eventeo surrender to the Derethi.{{book ref|Elantris|59}} With the aid of Hrathen, Raoden, [[Galladon]], and other Elantrians, she fightsfought off the Derethi invasion and savessaved both Kae and Teod from Dilaf's attack.{{book ref|Elantris|62}}

Afterward, she iswas married in a grand ceremony to Raoden, and becomesbecame the Queen of Arelon.{{book ref|Elantris|63}} She becomesbecame pregnant by him afterafterwards.
