Ranette is long-legged and lean with dark hair which she wears in a shoulder-length ponytail. While Wax, Wayne and Marasi are staying in her house, she wears brown trousers, a white laced shirt and a long Roughs-style leather coat.{{book ref|mb4|14}}
Outside of the text, Sanderson has mentioned that Ranette is a lesbian{{qa ref|1100|8|Is there any chance of queer characters?|date=2015-1-8}}. It has never been explicitly stated simply because it has not been relevant to the story, but it may become more clear in [[Shadows of Self]]{{qa ref|1109|12|Do you have any gay characters in any of your books?|date=2015-1-6}}.
