Kabsal appears as a Ardent in the [[Palanaeum]]. He pretends to pursue romantic involvement with [[Shallan Davar]] during her time in [[Kharbranth]] with the goal of assassinating her mentor and teacher [[Jasnah Kholin]], a well-known atheist. Shallan at first suspects him trying to convert Jasnah, and then later believes he seeks to prevent Shallan from becoming an atheist. He andclaims Shallanto sharehave afound passionproof forof jamthe [[Almighty]]s existence, andwhich he oftendemonstates bringsby jamplaying notes next to a metal plate with salt on it. As the librarynotes whereare played the salt takes the shapes different cities from the [[Silver Kingdoms]]. Jasnah sees the demostration knows what Kabsal is doing, and Shallanasks spendhim mostto ofmake theirthe timeshape of [[Urithiru]]. JasnahShe is unwelcoming, claiming that is what Kabsal expects, and if she had been welcoming he would have been surprised and suspicious.
 
He and Shallan share a passion for jam, and he often brings jam to the library where Jasnah and Shallan spend most of their time. When Shallan is in the hospital talking to Jasnah, he brings poisoned bread with jam as the antidote, knowing that Jasnah doesn't like jam and will only eat the bread. Jasnah discovers this, and [[soulcast]]s the bread.
