===The Diagram===
Graves became a member of the [[Diagram (group)|Diagram]] at an unknown point in the past and developed relationships with [[Taravangian]] and other key members. He did not agree with Taravangian's position that [[Dalinar Kholin]] would need to be assassinated--instead believing that the [[Highprince]] should be allowed to take over after the assassination of [[Elhokar Kholin]].{{book ref|sa2|46}}{{wob ref|4968}} Taravangian allowed Graves to freely carry out his own interpretation of the Diagram.{{book ref|sa3|107}}
Graves introduced to [[Kaladin]] by Moash, who had ties with him before Moash was made a bridgeman. [[Danlan]] is in his retinue. Graves is a member of [[Diagram (group)|the Diagram]]. He informs Moash that until he is given specific orders, he is allowed to pursue his own interests and goals. He chooses to assassinate King [[Elhokar]] so that [[Dalinar]] could take the Alethi throne, making him an ally of the Diagram.

[[Taravangian]] tells a slightly different story. He says that Graves communicated his interpretation of the Diagram in relation to Dalinar, and because Taravangian wasn't confident his own interpretation was correct, he allowed Graves to proceed.{{book ref|sa3|107}} Taravangian says that Graves is replaceable, but since he was high enough up to have his interpretation heard by Taravangian himself, it is unclear exactly where Graves was in the Diagram hierarchy.
On the [[Shattered Plains]] Graves began working with [[Danlan Morakotha]], [[Febrth]], [[Fia]], and [[Rill]] to set up the assassination of Elhokar.{{book ref|sa3|43}} After recruiting [[Moash]], whom he came in contact with via Rill, Graves was able to make his first attempt on the king's life.{{book ref|sa2|46}}
 
The first plot involved weakening the balcony railing in the king's chambers and allowing the king to "accidentally" fall to his death. The railing was cut with a [[Shardblade]], presumably by Graves himself, shortly after a [[highstorm]], when Moash had an opportunity to discretely allow the saboteur through.{{book ref|sa2|23}} Elhokar was able to hold on to the railing after it gave way, however, and was rescued by his guards. After this failure, Moash introduced Graves to Kaladin one evening at the [[Ornery Chull]], hoping to earn the captain's support. Graves attempted to recruit Kaladin to their cause by appealing to Kaladin's experience as a surgeon. Though hesitant at first, Kaladin eventually agreed to aid in Graves' conspiracy.{{book ref|sa2|68}} Graves developed a second plan in which Kaladin would lead Elhokar to a predetermined location where Graves himself would shoot the king with an arrow.{{book ref|sa2|68}}

While attempting to determine where they were, they were ambushed by a party of four [[Voidbringers]], presumably [[Fused]] using [[voidlight]]. Graves was stabbed in the chest by one of them, and his shardblade materialized next to him, signaling he was truly dead. Graves was ordered to remove the Alethi leadership entirely--though Taravangian was sending Szeth after Dalinar (the more dangerous one) and Graves was to remove Elhokar. Graves, however, interpreted the diagram differently. He thinks that Dalinar cannot be killed by Szeth, or anyone, and is hoping to remove Elhokar, have Dalinar step up, and help them. He has passages of the Diagram that indicate, to him, this is the natural outcome of removing Elhokar.
