Early in the history of [[Scadrial]], [[Preservation]]'s Vessel, [[Leras]], sacrificed most of his consciousness to imprison [[Ruin]]'s mind in the [[Well of Ascension]], preventing him from destroying the planet.{{epigraph ref|mb3|55}}{{epigraph ref|mb3|60}} After the death of the [[Lord Ruler]], however, Ruin was successfully able to manipulate [[Vin]] into taking up the Well's power and then releasing it, which allowed him to be free.{{msh ref|2|3}} Once free, Ruin was unable to immediately Splinter Preservation, but brought his power to bear against what remained of Leras, slowly killing the Vessel.{{msh ref|3|2}} The [[Ire]], aware of Leras's impending death, sought to use [[Ire's orb|a device]] to [[Connection|Connect]] one of their members Preservation and Ascend.{{msh ref|5|2}} The device, however, was stolen by [[Kelsier]], who used it after Leras finally died, taking up the portion of Preservation's power that Leras had still been holding and preventing Ruin from Splintering Preservation.{{msh ref|6|4}}
For much of [[Scadrial|Scadrian]] history, [[Ruin]]'s mind was trapped in the [[Well of Ascension]], which prevented him from acting on his Intent. destroying the planet. Though he was still capable of influencing people through speaking into their minds and manipulating text. He was capable of exiting every 1024 years, if one were to take up the power in the Well of Ascension and release it, though if they were to use it any other way, he would remain trapped.{{msh ref|2|3}}
 
Kelsier continued to hold that power until Vin, Leras's chosen successor,{{epigraph ref|mb3|epilogue}} had her link to Ruin—a [[Hemalurgy|Hemalurgicly]] charged [[Vin's earring|earring]]—removed, whereupon she began absorbing the [[mist]]s and Kelsier released the portion of Preservation's power he held, allowing Vin to Ascend and became the Vessel of [[Preservation]].{{msh ref|6|7}}{{book ref|mb3|73}} During the [[Battle of Hathsin]], Vin then sacrifices herself in order to kill Ruin's Vessel, [[Ati]].{{msh ref|6|8}}{{book ref|mb3|81}}
One cycle, he attempted to manipulate the Hero of Ages to free him, by manipulating the Terris prophecies. But to his dismay, Kwaan noticed his tampering and sent [[Rashek]] to stop [[Alendi]] from releasing him.{{epigraph ref|mb2|55}} Rashek would come to kill Alendi and take up the power for himself, becoming the Lord Ruler and further perpetuating Ruin's imprisonment. This also led to an immense change in Scadrial's geography, ecology, and orbit, and the death of most of its inhabitants.

Over a thousand years later, he saw an opportunity to free himself once again, manipulating Kelsier and Vin to rise up and kill the Lord Ruler, and ensuring that Vin. After the death of the Lord Ruler, however, he was successfully able to manipulate Vin into taking up the Well's power and then releasing it, which allowed him to be free.{{msh ref|2|3}}
 
During all of this, [[Leras]] was quickly dying due to Ruin's increased aggression and capacity after his release, and the [[Ire]], who had set up their base at the edge of the Scadrian subastral, were planning to use a piece of [[Ire's orb|Invested technology]] to Connect to Preservation and Ascend, greatly increasing their power and influence.{{msh ref|5|2}} But Kelsier, hearing of their plans, stole the orb from them, and used them to Connect to Preservation as Leras died, becoming the Vessel of Preservation. He briefly had a bout with Ruin, but was ultimately unable to properly use the Shard, due to clashing Intents and his lack of connection to the Physical Realm.{{msh ref|6|4}}
 
After [[Marsh]] removed Vin's [[Hemalurgy|Hemalurgic]] spike, Kelsier gave Vin the Shard and she Ascended and became the Vessel of [[Preservation]].{{book ref|mb3|73}} During the [[Battle of Hathsin]], Ruin had Marsh kill [[Elend Venture]], which inspired Vin to sacrifice herself and kill Ruin's Vessel, [[Ati]].{{book ref|mb3|81}}

At some point following the Catacendre, Kelsier would come to form the Ghostbloods, which would come to be a major power throughout the cosmere, most notably on Scadrial and Roshar.{{cite}}
