[[Rithmatist]]s are able to create chalklings by drawing Lines of Making.{{book ref|Rithmatist|23}} More detailed and beautiful chalklings are stronger than more simplistic ones. The reason for this is unknown.{{book ref|Rithmatist|9}} The shape of a chalkling has a significant amount of influence on its abilities. A knight, for example, is strongest when attached to a bindpoint whereas a creature with long teeth and claws is better at attacking. Likewise an amphorusamorphous blob can take a number of hits from Lines of Vigor but moves slowly whereas a creature with many legs can move quickly but isn't as strong when attacking.{{ref|name=chalklingtypes}} Binding a chalkling to a defenseLine of Warding strengthens it (pg. 133).{{citebook ref|Rithmatist|10}} Chalklings can be difficult to outrun and do not get tired (pg. 138).{{citebook ref|Rithmatist|10}}{{book ref|Rithmatist|21}}

;Glyph of Rending: Allows a chalkling to interact with objects not made of chalk.{{book ref|Rithmatist|8}} This glyph is not taught until the Rithmatist arrives in Nebrask for their final year of training. While this glyph can be dangerous (by allowing chalklings to attack people), it can also be used for more productive means. Chalklings with the Glyph of Rending can be used to provide free energy; Rithmatists are frequently employed by [[Springrail]] companies to use chalklings to wind the large spools of springs used to power the Springrails (an arrangement that is quite profitable for the Rithmatists).{{citebook ref|Rithmatist|13}}

The [[Scribbler]] was able to turn captured Rithmatists into wild chalkings. These particular chalklings reform when destroyed by chalk or acid.{{citebook ref|Rithmatist|23}} After [[Joel]], [[Melody]], and [[Fitch|Professor Fitch]] defeated the Scribbler, the victims are restored.{{book ref|Rithmatist|24}}
