Sometime in the distant past, [[Odium]] arrived on Sel and attacked both herthem and Skai, killing both of them and [[Splinter]]ing their Shards.{{epigraph ref|sa1|22}}{{au ref|Sel}} At the time, he was hunting [[Ambition]], but found them first,{{wob ref|1550}} and likely used their alleged violation of the Vessels' pact as justification for killing them.{{wob ref|8358}} After Aona and Skai died, Odium locked much of Devotion and [[Dominion]]'s power in the [[Cognitive Realm]] to prevent them from gaining another Vessel, which makes the Cognitive Realm around Sel very dangerous.{{wob ref|2546}}{{au ref|Sel}}

On present-day Sel, while most of hertheir power remains trapped in the Cognitive Realm, some of it is in the [[Aon]]s at the center of [[seon]]s, which are Splinters of Devotion.{{wob ref|4679}} There also appears to still be a [[perpendicularity]] tied to herthem, which takes the form of a [[Devotion's Perpendicularity|round pool filled with blue liquid]] located on a mountain near [[Elantris (city)|Elantris]].{{book ref|Elantris|61}} When [[Raoden]] enters the pool, he hears a voice, which may be that of Aona's [[Cognitive Shadow]], though whether or not shethey even hashave a Cognitive Shadow is unknown.{{wob ref|5786}}{{wob ref|6356}}
