Ahan was an Arelish merchant from Sel. He was very fat and had an air of arrogance about him, not seeming to take much seriously. He was impetuous to a fault, often speaking and acting without thinking.

Following the Reod, Ahan rose to prominence in Iadon's income-based meritocracy. His fortune was second only to Duke Roial, with whom Ahan shared a friendly rivalry. Ahan, along with Roial and several others, was part of Sarene's resistance to Hrathen's efforts to convert Arelon.

Shortly after Telrii seized control of Arelon in the wake of Iadon's death, Ahan betrayed the group of resisters in an effort to finally best his long-time rival. Things took a turn for the unexpected when Roial was killed for treason. Ahan never recovered from the guilt of his betrayal. He lost much of his weight, and thereafter only spoke only in a dazed, sickly voice.b
