He was very fat{{book ref|b|Elantris|c|11}} and had an air of arrogance about him,{{book ref|b|Elantris|c|53}} not seeming to take much seriously.{{book ref|b|Elantris|c|11}} He was impetuous to a fault,{{book ref|b|Elantris|c|53}} often speaking and acting without thinking.{{book ref|b|Elantris|c|32}}

Following the [[Reod]], Ahan rose to prominence in [[Iadon]]'s income-based meritocracy. His fortune was second only to Duke [[Roial]], with whom Ahan shared a friendly rivalry.{{book ref|b|Elantris|c|11}} Ahan, along with Roial and several others, was part of [[Sarene]]'s resistance to [[Hrathen]]'s efforts to convert Arelon.

Shortly after [[Telrii]] seized control of Arelon in the wake of Iadon's death, Ahan betrayed the group of resisters in an effort to finally best his long-time rival. Things took a turn for the unexpected when Roial was killed for treason.{{book ref|b|Elantris|c|53}} Ahan never recovered from the guilt of his betrayal.
