In a Reddit Q&A leading up to the release of the first book, Brandon stated that the trilogy would likely become a four book series.{{wob ref|10944}} In his 2018 [[State of the Sanderson]], he stated that due to the amount of time needed to complete ''[[Rhythm of War]]'', Skyward 3 "[wouldn't] be written until 2020, for a spring 2021 release."{{wob ref|12479}} In the 2019 State of the Sanderson, this was updated to writing in late 2020 for a "likely" 2021 release.{{wob ref|13544}}
