Shortly after becoming a professor at Armedius Academy, Nalizar challenged Professor [[Fitch]] to a duel.{{book ref|Rithmatist|1}} By winning this duel he and Professor Fitch exchanged places in seniority: Nalizar became a tenured professor and Fitch fell back to the lowest rank, tutoring professor.{{book ref|Rithmatist|2}}
 
He spent much of his time at Armedius researching books on Rithmatics, particularly Rithmatic theory, which was later speculated by [[Joel Saxon]] to be a means of ascertaining humanity's understanding of Rithmatics.{{book ref|Rithmatist|25}}
 
He was present during the defeat of the [[Scribbler]], who he claimed to have tracked from Nebrask. He was inadvertently splashed with acid by Joel Saxon and knocked unconscious by one of the Scribbler's [[Rithmatics#Line of Revocation|Lines of Revocation]].{{book ref|Rithmatist|23}} He was lauded by as a hero by Joel after the battle.{{book ref|Rithmatist|25}}
 
Joel talked with Nalizar before the grand melee to apologize for suspecting him. Joel realized that Harding hadn’t attacked Nalizar, and that Nalizar hadn’t seemed suprised that Harding had been in the dormitory that night. Joel saw that Nalizar had the same blackness behind his eyes as Inspector Harding, who was possessed by a [[Forgotten]], indicating that Nalizar likely is as well. He all but admitted to being one during his conversation with Joel. He convinced Joel that nobody will believe any accusations against him, given Joel's prior retracted accusation and praise following the defeat of the Scribbler.{{book ref|Rithmatist|25}}
 
During the melee, he was surprised by how well Joel and Melody did and called their performance beautiful. He also said that he would watch them very closely.{{book ref|Rithmatist|25}}
