===Failed Engagement to Elend===
Shan became engaged to [[Elend Venture]] around {{date|1021|fe}}.{{book ref|mb1|18}} It was presumably a political engagement between the two houses, as no movement was made towards a marriage for a year.{{book ref|mb1|18}} Although they technically never broke off the engagement, Shan became known as Elend's "former fiancée".{{book ref|mb1|19}}{{book ref|mb1|20}} Elend was flippant about the situation, but Shan seemed to hold some personal bitterness about the fact that he did not seem to care about marrying her.{{book ref|mb1|23}}{{book ref|mb1|28}}

Shan met Vin at her firstsecond ball as Valette Renoux, and Vin was struck by her haughty attitude.{{book ref|mb1|18}} Shan mercilessly insulted Valette and attempted to subtly Soothe her emotions in order to control her, but Vin noticed it thanks to training that she received from [[Breeze]].{{book ref|mb1|18}} [[Kelsier]] received further confirmation that Shan was a Soother from a disguised [[Hoid]], who also told him that Shan kept some spare brass in her glove.{{book ref|mb1|18}}

Vin continued to subject herself to Shan's abuse in order to maintain her Valette persona.{{book ref|mb1|20}}{{book ref|mb1|23}} As "Valette" gained confidence, Shan became even more insulting towards her and made stronger use of her [[Allomancy]], eventually tasking Valette with digging up more dirt on Elend.{{book ref|mb1|23}} Vin tried to warn Elend about Shan, but he did not share her concern.{{book ref|mb1|28}} Shan realized that Valette's allegiance was with Elend, and no longer wanted anything to do with her.{{book ref|mb1|28}} Vin was frustrated that she could no longer learn more about whatever Shan was plotting.{{book ref|mb1|29}}
