Flaring malatium allows an Allomancer to see not just a malatium shadow of a person, but seems to give them a glimpse into the [[Spiritual Realm]], allowing them to see a vision of a past event in another person's life by seeing their [[Connection]] and their past.{{msh ref|1|1}}{{ref|group=nb|text=Given the only circumstance in which this effect is seen, it may be a result of flaring malatium at the moment of death and transition to the [[Cognitive Realm]], rather than a result of simply flaring the metal in and of itself.}}

Malatium is different from other Allomantic metals in that, when it is burned, the Allomancer does not draw upon the power of Preservation. Instead, its effects are powered by Ruin's [[Investiture]] in the atium of the alloy.{{wob ref|8028}}

Malatium is different from other allomantic metals, in that when it (and presumably the other Atium alloys) is burned, it provides the power rather than Preservation, since it is of Ruin. {{annotation ref|mb3|chapter=71}}
While learning [[Allomancy]] from [[Gemmel]], [[Kelsier]] infiltrates [[Keep Shezler]] and, after defeating the Mistborn [[Antillius Shezler]], comes across Shezler's notes theorizing about a possible eleventh Allomantic metal.{{book ref|11m}} Even after becoming [[Harmony]], [[Sazed]] could not find any prior legends about an eleventh metal and concluded that the legends were likely fabricated by [[Ruin]] to help drive Kelsier's plan to kill the [[Lord Ruler]].{{epigraph ref|mb3|24}} Between Shezler's apparent mental instability,{{book ref|11m}} which might have allowed Ruin to speak to him, and Ruin's ability to manipulate text, it is entirely plausible that Ruin could have been behind the creation of Shezler's notes. Furthermore, Gemmel, the person who directed Kelsier to Keep Shezler and drew his attention to Shezler's notes in the first place, showed signs of being manipulated by Ruin,{{book ref|11m}} suggesting that Ruin was indeed intentionally leading Kelsier to the notes. Ruin later claimed that he was in fact responsible for manipulating Kelsier into "discovering" the metal.{{msh ref|6|1}}
