Central in Luthadel lies Kredik Shaw, the Lord Ruler's palace. Being several times the size of any nobleman's keep, it is by far the largest building in the city. Befitting its name, being Terris for "The Hill of a Thousand Spires", the entire palace is an asymmetric collection of wings, towers and enormous black spires, straight or twisted, needle-like or wide, tall or taller. The variety gives the building a twisted, off-center symmetry, almost in balance, but not quite.{{book ref|mb1|2}}{{book ref|mb1|10}}{{book ref|mb1|14}}
By far the largest building in Luthadel, near the center, looms like a massive, multi-spined insect.{{book ref|mb1|2}} <br>

"The name was Terris; it meant “The Hill of a Thousand Spires.” Appropriate, since the imperial palace resembled a patch of enormous black spears thrust into the ground. Some of the spires twisted, others were straight. Some were thick towers, other were thin and needle-like. They varied in height, but each one was tall. Around Kredik Shaw the grounds are wide and open, nothing but a flat space paved with cobblestones surrounds it. There is no outer wall around the complex, neither tree or foliage nor any building close to distract one's eyes from the disturbing architecture.{{book ref|mb1|14}}
"Kredik Shaw lay before them. The peaked spires and sheer towers rose like dark talons in the night. They varied greatly in thickness—some were wide enough to house stairwells and large rooms, but others were simply thin rods of steel jutting up into the sky. The variety gave the mass a twisted, off-center symmetry—an almost-balance.
