The Palanaeum can be located inside the Conclave.[1][2] Maps of the Conclave are available for purchase.[3]

History

Structure and Sections

Cave-in's, while rare, do occasionally occur within the Conclave following the Highstorm, due to the force of the storm against the mountain protecting Kharbranth. Care must be taken when clearing as to not trigger further collapses while clearing rubble.

Main Entrance

No gate stands before the main entrance to the Conclave, which is painted white and carved into the rock face.[4][1] Squat metallic colored domes sit on the outcroppings over the entrance. It opens into a large, broad, and long rectangular hallway, with branching corridors and doorways to grand chambers set into the side walls.[1] The hallways are long and slope downwards into the mountain.[1] Lighting is provided from infused gemstones set into lamps, and the tinkling of bells can be heard throughout the building.[1][5]

Palanaeum

The Palanaeum can be found, deep within the mountains and is approximately a thirty minute walk from the outside of the building.[6] It is set a long distance away from the residential guest suites.[7]

Residential Wing

A residential wing is available to house important guests during their stay in the city, and is guarded by two master servants who control access to the rooms and also provide assistance when required.[7] Spanreeds can be left with the servants to be monitored, who will inform guests when the fabrials are activated.[8] Heatrials can be found throughout rooms in the Conclave to provide heat and some rooms retain cave like aspects, with ceilings being intentionally left as rough stone.[9] The rooms are serviced by a number of maid's employed by Taravangian who are all carefully selected before being hired.[7]

Bathing Rooms

Bathing rooms are available for guest use, with pools carved directly into the ground to create baths.[9] Heatrials can be found within each bath to heat the water, and are also used to preheat water before the bath is filled.[9] The Conclave uses a plumbing system to fill the baths, that utilises gravity to conduct water through its piping.[10] This set up has spread beyond Kharbranth and has become popular within the Alethi Warcamps.[10] Books from the Palanaeum cannot be taken into the Conclave bathing rooms.[9]

Palace Gardens

The palace gardens are accessible to guests as well as the Kharbranthian ardents. The fauna of the gardens is diverse, however, not to the extent that could be found in places such as Jah Keved.[8] Low stone walls are used in some of the gardens to create walls and provide privacy.[8]

Taravangian's Study and Secret Hospital

Taravangian's study is set against the outer rock face, with a large window set into the wall overlooking the city and out towards the ocean. Overfilled bookcases line the right wall, while two dozen lamps in a double row are on the left. A door in the wall of the room leads to a secret hospital hidden within the Conclave, not marked on on any of the palace maps. Railings running along the sides of the large room create a terrace look, and hospital beds take up the floor space. The room is large enough to hold several hundred beds, many of which are occupied by the sick and dying. Everything in the room is painted white.[3]

Those that are brought to the hospital are killed through exsanguination. This method is used as it is both slow and convenient, allowing for the recording of Death Rattles from those affected by Moelach. While it is preferable that only terminal patients are transferred to the hospital, the number of occupants is sometimes bolstered by high risk citizens. The ardent Dova oversees the collection of the Death Rattles.[3][11]

[1] - Painted white and carved from the rock face. The roof outcroppings have squat domes that are painted in metalic colours (added) - Inside it is a large rectangular hallway lined with Stormlight lamps. Broad, high and long, with grand chambers lining the sides and smaller corridors branch off from the main room. (added)

[2] - The hallways are particularly long and drill downwards into the mountain (added)

[4] - There is no gate before the Conclave (added)

[12] - Another reference to the Conclave being underground - Jasnah and Shallan's quarters are within the Conclave

[13] - Shallan and her drawings became well known around the Conclave fairly soon after she was taken on as Jasnah's ward.

[9] - The baths in the Conclave are carved directly into the ground and heated by fabrials. (added) - The Conclave has heated plumbing (the water is pre-heated using fabrials) and water is delivered to the baths via pipes. (added) - Running water system - Heat fabrials are also used in Kharbranth to heat rooms. (added) - Books from the Palanaeum are not to be taken into the bathing chambers. (added)

[8] - Guests staying in the Conclave can leave their spanreeds with master-servants and be notified when they have received a message (added) - The palace gardens are varied, but not as extensive as those on Shallan's family's estate. Some are structured like mazes made of stone - the walls are tall enough to shield someone from view when sitting but not when standing. (added)

[7] - It is a long walk from the Palanaeum to the guest quarters. (added) - The guest quarters are guarded by master-servants who fulfil the purpose of both concierges and guards and monitor who enters and exits the area. (added) - The roof of Shallan's room has been left intentionally rough and resembles the roof of a cave. (added) - The maids that work for the king were carefully chosen (added) Taravangian goes for walks at midday and often walks through the gardens.

Secret Hospital

[3] There is a passage from Taravangian's study to his secret hospital The hospital is hidden and not listen on any maps that Szeth could gain access to (through bribes or purchases) The room is large and long and is painted white. It is filled with hundreds and hundreds of beds and many of them are filled The king tries to only move the worst case patients to the secret hospital as they are unlikely to survive, however when not enough sick patients can be provided those who the 'forgotten and the lowly' are taken and brought to die. The secret hospital functions as a way to maximise and record the death rattles
