He iswas among a group of twenty-one squires that participateparticipated in a martial competence test over the [[Purelake]], testing their ability with [[Basic Lashing]]s. The squires havehad to throw bags of colored powder at each other and avoid getting hit by bags, which leaveleft colored marks on their white clothing. During the test, Ty leadsled a group of four squires that attacksattacked other individuals as a team, minimizing the return fire. They noticenoticed that Szeth iswas winning the contest and focusfocused their attention on him. Szeth iswas able to hold his own against the group, even hitting Ty in the face with a bag. However, Szeth runsran out of [[Stormlight]] and iswas pelted with bags, landing in the Purelake just before the test endsended. Ty finishesfinished with only five hits against him, and iswas shocked when the masters agreeagreed that Szeth won via a loophole; he was cleansed of color by swimming in the lake.{{book ref|sa3|98}}
