'''Tanalan''' is the lord of [[Rathalas]]. He has violet eyes and a nasally accent that is typical for the region.{{book ref|sa3|71}}
At the age of seven he witnesses his [[Tanalan's father|father]] die at the hands of [[Dalinar]] Kholin. Dalinar had been given orders by his brother [[Gavilar[[ to also kill Tanalan, however, Dalinar instead lets him and his mother escape. Nine years later, Tanalan returns to Rathalas to take his place as city lord. He demands the return of his fathers [[shardblade]], [[Oathbringer (shadeblade)|Oathbringer]] and heads the rebellion of the city against the Kholin regime.
Tanalan is killed by Dalinar when he returns to Rathalas to quell the rebellion. Tanalan's continual defiance of Gavilar as well as his attempt on Dalinar's life lead to the Kholin and Sadeas armies razing the city to the ground and slaughtering its citizens. His wife and children are also killed during this battle.
