A Surgebinder is a type of magic user on the world of Roshar. They are capable of drawing Stormlight into the body and utilizing it to control the forces of nature.

Each Surgebinder has control of two of ten fundamental forces, or "surges". So far, we are aware of at least three of the available forces:

  • Atmospheric Pressure
  • Gravity
  • Transformation

Each of the ten combinations of two forces corresponds with an order of the Knights Radiant, for instance, the Windrunners can manipulate both Atmospheric Pressure and Gravity.

All of the Knights Radiant were Surgebinders, but Szeth suggests that it is possible to be a Surgebinder without being one of the Knights Radiant.
