;Plot Summary
Shallan has ordered her guards to look for violence that has been repeated. A couple days ago somebody was hanged. The murder is repeated. Shallan chases after the killer. She discovers a hidden room with a pit. Shallan sends Pattern to retrieve Adolin. Shallan promises to wait. Adolin brings bridge four and they descend into the pit. There is a room covered in murals. The ceiling is a depiction of the ten heralds, and the walls have three figures on them. Shallan describes one of them as Almighty, or Honor, and the other two as pagan symbols. Adolin opens two locked doors with his shardblade. Inside they find an old decaying library. Down a third tunnel Renarin sees the Unmade Re-Shephir. The Unmade attacks by creating vaguely human figures out of black goo. Adolin and everyone are forced to retreat until Shallan discovers that it is afraid of Lightweavers. Shallan presses forward. With the help of the others she gets close enough to touch it with her bare safe-hand.

;Plot Summary
Teft (noted as missing during Bridge 4 training) wakes up in an alleyway after a night of indulging in fire moss. He stumbles to a well for water and sees the reflection of a spren in the water. He returns to the fire moss den from the night before, indulging in three more bowels (a ruby broam's worth of fire moss). He thinks about how he's broken his oath and that the spren had best leave. He reflects that he had been addicted to fire moss when he served as a soldier for Brightlord Sadeas but it ultimately led to him being made a bridgerunnerbridgeman for tardiness. He wakes up with his head on the table and a puddle of drool. Kaladin and Rock find him and carry him back to Bridge 4, where he makes promises to let them help him. He is terrified of the looks the other bridgemen will give him in the days to come, as well as the shame he feels for relapsing.
