Navani runs across the broken battlefield of Thaylen City to reach Dalinar, who she embraces. Dalinar informs her of his returning memories and his confrontation with Odium, after which he kisses her. He then asks her to study the gemstone that held [[Nergaoul]] and to teach him to read.

Shallan pushes off Jasnah and Navani's attempts to get her a palanquin as she, Radiant, and Veil struggle for complete control of Shallan. Adolin approaches her, they embrace, and she gives in to him getting her a palanquin. Kaladin, Rock, and Lopen touch down near where Shallan stands, and Veil takes over, mooning over Kaladin. Shallan finally suppresses Radiant and Veil, putting them in the back of her mind, finally accepting her decision to marry Adolin.

Venli stands on the deck of a ship full of retreating Parshendi forces as Timbre pulses to her how many of his people died in the combat. She walks over to two parshmen, struggling with their identities post-Everstorm, to tell them of the listeners.

Kaladin lands on a nearby rooftop, surveying the city, Shallan glances at him, Adolin sees this and says he'll step back and let Kaladin have Shallan. Shallan goes on a long tangent about how she doesn't love Kaladin but that Adolin the one for her, after which they passionately kiss, and Shallan commits to Adolin that none of her alternate personalities will take control and go after Kaladin.

Kaladin discusses with Syl the confliction he has over whether humanity, having lived on Roshar for thousands of years, or the Parshendi, the original inhabitants of Roshar, are in the right. He reaches the conclusion that he and Bridge Four will be different than the Knights Radiant who were a part of the Recreance by obeying their principles and oaths. He then thanks Teft for opening the Oathgate, and they both go together to console Rock.

Lopen makes banter and jokes with Rua, teaching him a rude gesture in the process, he then attends to some wounded soldiers, one of whom asks him how one becomes a Radiant. Lopen tells him the easy part is swearing the First Ideal: "Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before pancakes." but that the hard part is swearing the Second Ideal, which he swears, not expecting the Stormfather to accept it. He and Rua make the rude gesture at the Stormfather, as Lopen is angry the Stormfather hadn't accepted his oath in the heat of battle.

Ash drags Taln through Thaylen City, trying to reach the Oathgate and make it to Azir, where they will be more inconspicuous. Something inside Ash rips as Moash kills Jezrien, her father. Jasnah, nearby, notices, looks at a drawing she has of Ash and Taln from Hoid as Ash falls unconscious for the first time in thousands of years.
