;Plot Summary

In a flashback, Dalinar is at a feast. He wishes that instead he could go and eat with his men. Dalinar leaves the dining hall during the Highstorm to go and find his knife. He comes back and suprises the foriegner Toh who Gavilar is trying to convince to join them. Toh is disturbed by Dalinar going out into the Highstorm. Navani and Ialai leave the women hall and talk to Gavilar, Sadeas and Dalinar. They try to convince Dalinar to marry Evi, Toh's sister from Rira. Dalinar says he will do it if Gavilar wants him to.

;Plot Summary

Dalinar is spending time with Evi. They are burning prayers. Dalinar thinks about how Evi's religion is similer but very different from his. Dalinar leaves to go and fight. Gavilar and Dalinar talk about their plans. Gavilar says that Dalinar needs to defeat Kalinor, the shardbearer Highprince. Dalinar attacks and gets so enthralled he doesn't realize hoe many he is killing. Eventually Kalinor gets coerced to come out. Dalinar fights him and the two end up on a high ledge. Dalinar defeats him but after much bickering. Dalinar than goes down. He sees Gavilar come to congratulate him but Dalinar is caught up in the battle and thinks to himself that he should be the ruler not his brother. He dashes to Gavilar intending to kill him but than Dalinar realizes that they are brothers and stops. He gives up his newly recieved shardplate and blade to Gavilar to be given to his son. Dalinar says to himself that he must never be king.
