Origins and the Recreance
The Stormfather is an incredibly powerful spren who likely had existed so long as there were highstorms. It appears he can hold onto memories perfectly or at least better than other spren, as he was aware of what had been done to the rest of the spren by their human counterparts.sa2
Stormfather is likely to be one of the oldest entities in the cosmere, as the highstorms he commands predate even the Shattering of Adonalsium.8624 During the early millennia of his existence, he was not particularly congizant or self-aware, but rather simply the uncaring storm.sa3 Even back then, however, he was capable of bonding with humans.sa3

Shortly before the Recreance, Honor altered the Stormfather in a frantic preparation for his own death.sa3 Among others, he gave him the capacity to create honorspren, as well as bestowed him with a set of visions to be sent to a person who would benefit from them, in an event of a new Desolation.sa3sa2 Back then, Stormfather had only childlike intelligence, although it grew over time.sa3 When the Recreance came, he was bonded, though unlike many others, he managed to survive. Grieving for the lost honorspren -- which he believed included Sylphrena -- he refused to make new ones for centuries. Eventually, he created ten, who would then create children of their own, until the honorpren became a nation again.sa3
The Stormfather is first seen directly when Kaladin is strung up to face his judgment by order of Torol Sadeas. Kaladin glimpses him as a large face, as vast as the entire sky before him but later questions whether he had just been delirious from the onslaught of the highstorm.sa1

Visions and Bonds
He is shown again directly the second time that Kaladin dreams of being the highstorm as it passes overhead. Here Kaladin recognizes the dream sequence and begins dreaming lucidly, allowing him to turn around and speak to the Stormfather directly. He accuses Kaladin of being a traitor who will hurt and kill Syl. He mentions that he believes humans cannot be trusted, and then gives Kaladin a warning and an apology before he wakes up.sa2
At some point shortly before the True Desolation, Syl was rediscovered, and Stormfather arranged to have her delivered to one of the honorspren cities, ordering Notum to keep an eye on her.sa3sa3 Against his wishes, she eventually escaped to form a Nahel Bond after realizing that a new Desolation was coming.sa3

Around the same time, Stormfather began sending out his visions. While there were less than ten people to have received them, the only ones known are Gavilar and Dalinar Kholin.12268 Gavilar began seeing them shortly before his death, although he interpreted them far differently than they were supposed to be.3316 This led indirectly to the creation of the Diagram, as well as Gavilar's cooperation with the Sons of Honor in a bid to bring the Heralds back, even if it meant starting a new Desolation.sa2sa2
At one point Dalinar began seeing visions from The Almighty. The Stormfather did this as it was instructed to him by Honor but personally saw it as a waste of time, as the Everstorm materialized nonetheless.sa2

Following Gavilar's death, Stormfather began sending his visions to the younger brother. This led to Dalinar's reputation in the Alethi warcamps plummeting, but also to him beginning to research the Desolations and making the first attempt at truly uniting Alethkar.sa1 At the same time, as Kaladin was bonding Syl, Stormfather was keeping an eye on him. When Kaladin was strung up by to face his judgement by Sadeas' orders, Stormfather appeared, as if observing him, although Kaladin later assumed it was a delirious hallucination.sa1
When Sadeas's assassination attempt on the Shattered Plains leads to Kaladin falling 70 meters into the chasm below he survives.

While Kaladin and Shallan are waiting out the highstorm in the chasms, the Stormfather appears again to Kaladin. Here he makes it clear that he has effectively killed Syl and that he would never again regain his powers. He is also seen by Shallan, although he does not address her directly.sa2

Stormfather later visited Kaladin directly in a dream, where the two had a conversation. He accused Kaladin of being a traitor, and shared his belief that humans couldn't be trusted.sa2 His predictions seemingly came true when Kaladin killed Syl by breaking his bond.sa2 Stormfather visited him in a subsequent highstorm to tell him that she was dead and that Kaladin would never Surgebind again. While he let Shallan see him as well, he didn't speak with her.sa2
He later speaks to Dalinar during the Battle of Narak, where he claims that the Alethi side is lost but promises to conjure a highstorm later in order to sweep away their dead as a sign of respect.sa2

During the Battle of Narak, Stormfather spoke to Dalinar out of a vision, claiming that the Alethi were lost, and promising to send a highstorm to sweep away their bodies. At the same time, Syl began to regain her consciousness, and so Stormfather departed to stop her from re-bonding Kaladin.sa2 Despite his best efforts, Syl succeeded, and Stormfather reluctantly conceded.sa2
Kaladin could hear Syl arguing with him while attempting to protect Elhokar from Moash and Graves. Syl points out that he can only hold her back so long as Kaladin does not utter the words of the Knights Radiant and upon him doing so, the Stormfather reluctantly concedes that Syl may now rejoin Kaladin.sa2

Bondsmith spren
After ascending to the top of Urithiru, Dalinar speaks with him, successfully bonding him. The Stormfather requires that Dalinar go without Shardplate or Shardblade, and tells him that if Odium killed Honor he will surely do the same to him, but nonetheless accepts the words.sa2
Following the Battle, Dalinar climbed on top of Urithiru to speak with him. Stormfather answered, explaining the Everstorm and Honor's death, whereupon Dalinar attempted to bond him. Though initially, Stormfather was hostile to the idea, he eventually agreed once Dalinar said the Immortal Words, although under the stipulation that Dalinar would wield no Shards.sa2

TheThis new bond allowsallowed the StormfatherStromfather to show Dalinar hisHonor's visions at will, leading to Dalinar exploring them extensively.sa3 HeShortly also marriesafterwards, Dalinar asked Stormfather to marry him and Navani, atopto which he easily Urithiruagreed.sa3expand

Trivia
* Stormfather has two different "modes" of speech. He uses <span style='font-variant: small-caps'>all -caps</span> when talking to those unbonded to him, or when speaking so that everyone can hear him. He speaks normally when communicating directly with Dalinar after the latter becomes a Bondsmith.sa3 Interestingly, there are only two other characters shown speaking in all-caps -- Cultivation, and Syl, the latter only when about to be resurrected by Kaladin.sa3sa2
* While Stormfather refers to several people as "children of Honor", Kaladin is the only one he calls "child of Tanavast". There is some significance to it.12688
