Some types of spren live in symbiotic relationships with various other creatures extant on Roshar.{{17s ref|post|80010}}Perhaps the best known examples of this are [[greatshell]]s. There is a type of spren that lives in their bodies which contribute to their ability to grow to such large sizes.{{qa ref|977|158}}

 

The "magic fish" of the [[Purelake]] are another example of Rosharan fauna forming symbiotic bonds with spren.{{17s ref|post|80010}}

 

Each Order of the [[Knights Radiant]] formed a [[Nahel Bond]] with a different type of spren.{{cite}} This bond is similar in nature to the bond between a [[Seon]] and its master.{{17s ref|post|66166}} The bond between a knight and their spren could be strengthened by verbally or mentally stating certain [[Immortal Words|Ideals]] or ideas related to their Order. Once the bond has strengthened to a certain point, the spren gains the ability to become a [[Shardblade]] when needed.{{book ref|wor|84}} A sword was the base form for a shardblade since they were fashioned after the [[Honorblade]]s but they could become any shape their knight needed such as a spear, hammer, or shield.{{book ref|wor|86}}
