They look like melon-sized dark sphere that seems to suck in the light around it, and having indistict edges that blended into the air. It is also described as being "ringed with a pattern of misty symbols—they ran like a hoop from its top, around the side, to the bottom, then back up to the top."{{book ref|Elantris|part=postscript}}
