It is not clear how Splinters are formed, though it appears a Shard must actively create one.

Endowment seems to be able to form them at will for [[Returned]].

Since [[Odium]] killed [[Tanavast]],<ref name='TWoK_c75'>{{bref|TWoK|c|75}}</ref> the holder of [[Honor]], it has been theorized that Honor is Splintered as well.

 

All magic systems that are currently known are related to Shards.

[[Allomancy]] is of Preservation, [[Hemalurgy]] is of Ruin, and [[Feruchemy]] is the balance between the two Shards.

[[Awakening]] is of [[Endowment]].

It is thought that [[Surgebinding]] is of [[Honor]], but this is not confirmed.

It has been theorized that a Shard’s power creates sentience.
