Raoden was engaged to [[Sarene]] for political reasons, but he believed he knew her and loved her because of her letters and the talks they had through [[Seon]]. Raoden was thrown into Elantris just before Sarene arrived in [[Arelon]]. He first met her when she performed her widow’s trial in Elantris, and although he believed she was trying to help those there, he believed she was doing the worst thing possible for them. He later revised his opinion after she finished her trial and his band’s numbers increased significantly. Raoden later met Sarene when she was poisoned by [[Hrathen ]]and thrown into Elantris. He spent almost all of his time with her while she was there, but when the poison’s effects stopped, he told her to leave Elantris and help [[Kae]], even though he desperately wanted more time with her. Although he knew her for only a short time, his love for her was so great that he was willing to risk his life and try to rescue her from [[Dilaf]]. After traveling to [[Teod]] via [[Aon]] Tia, he fought to rescue her, and with the help of the other Elantrians and Hrathen, he was successful. Eventually, Sarene became pregnant with his child.
