A '''painrial''' is a type of [[Fabrial#Diminisher| diminishing fabrial]] used to decrease and even eliminate the pain felt by someone while allowing them to maintain feeling.{{book ref|twok|60}}
The [[Artifabrian]] [[Longshadow]] designed a painrial that was quite large, about the size of a fist,{{book ref|twok|22}} and had a set of claw-like legs which were wrapped around the pained area and locked in place with a clip.{{book ref|twok|60}} That particular painrial was powered by a ruby and made of polished brass.{{book ref|twok|22}} [[Navani Kholin]] later refined its design.{{book ref|twok|60}} She hoped to eventually to refine the design to be less bulky. Navani saw it being used by surgeons so they could operate without fear of causing pain to their patients. While it did not heal the wounds, Navani hoped that the painrial was a step in the right direction.
Navani also integrated a painrial device into her [[:file: vambrace.jpg|vambrace]] timepieces which she made for herself and [[Dalinar]].{{book ref|sa3|16}}{{book ref|sa3|104}} They offered some light pain relief and also could act as a defence mechanism, by releasing shocks into someone rather than taking their pain away.
