Makkek iswas a part of a group of footpads operating in the town of [[StaplindIronsway]] in Bavland when they killkilled [[Took]], Szeth's master at the time. When Makkek noticesnoticed Szeth holding Took's dead body, he callscalled him over, intending to quiet him if the need arisesarose, but while searching Took's belongings, he pickspicked up Szeth's [[Oathstone]]. Upon learning how it worksworked, he decidesdecided to keep it.{{book ref|sa1|i|3}} Shortly afterwards, he ordersordered Szeth to kill his fellow footpads in order to keep the Oathstone's existence a secret.{{book ref|sa1|i|6}}

For some time afterwards, Makkek hashad Szeth assassinate his rivals and act as his bodyguard, building the [[Shin]]'s reputation as a deadly shadow -- and his own reputation as a criminal mastermind by association. He movesmoved to [[Bornwater]], the largest mining town in the regionBavland, and usesused Szeth's skills to suborn or destroy pretty much every business and criminal in the city. This allowsallowed him to amass considerable wealth, which he flauntsflaunted with silk clothes and numerous lovers. His ambitions stretchstretched further, as he intendsintended to move to [[Kneespike]], the residence of a local lord. Throughout that time, Szeth never tellstold him about having a [[Shardblade]], although Makkek eventually beginsbegan to figure it out after rumors of burned-out eyes beginbegan to spread.{{book ref|sa1|i|6}}

At one point, a man named [[Gavashaw]] opensopened a tavern in Bornwater and ignoresignored Makkek's demands, having the favourfavor of the lord in Kneespike. This promptsprompted Makkek to send Szeth to kill him; however, the [[Diagram (group)|Diagram]] hashad been waiting for such an opportunity. As soon as Szeth leavesleft to kill Gavashaw, their assassin murdersmurdered Makkek and takestook the Oathstone, then bringsbrought it and Makkek's head to Szeth.{{book ref|sa1|i|6}}
