Kharbranth is extremely culturally diverse, with people from all over the world both visiting and residing there. The primary reason for its significance is the [[Palanaeum]], the largest known library on [[Roshar]]. Kharbranth is also known for the quality of its hospitals, and people come from all over the world to train there in medicine.

In [[The Way of Kings]], all of [[Shallan]]'s viewpoints take place in Kharbranth. [[Jasnah]] is using the Palanaeum in her research of the [[Voidbringer]]s. In his flashback chapters, [[Kaladin]] also mentions that his father wants to send him to Kharbranth to train as a surgeon.
