Near the end of 1166, Kaladin overheard two townswomen's disparaging remarks about Lirin. Angry at the women, he met his mother and asked her why people hated Lirin. She answered they did not hate him, but they were afraid of knowledge itself. The conversation turned into Kaladin's own future, and he realized his parents had encouraged him to spend time with Laral in hopes the two would marry. As Kaladin mulled over the conversation, Lirin arrived with the news that the new citylord had arrived. The family made their way to the town square and met up with Tien there. Brightlord [[Roshone]] arrived in his carriage and barely acknowledged the crowd waiting in the town square. When Lirin tried to welcome him to town, he responded by saying harshly it was Lirin's fault he ended up in that town. Worried, they returned home.{{book ref|sa1|25}}
 
Citylord Roshone's arrival brought misfortune to Kaladin's family. Believing that Lirin had stolen the spheres from Wistiow, he influenced the townspeople to stop making donations for Lirin's work, which was the primary source of the family's income.{{book ref|sa1|31}} While the townsfolk followed Roshone's suggestion, they still gave food to Lirin and Hesina when there was no one to see.{{book ref|sa1|37}} Tien was apprenticed to a carpenter because he was unsuitable to his father's profession while Kaladin was still indetermined whether he wanted to join the army or become a surgeon. About a year after Roshone's arrival, a group of men tried to break into Lirin's surgery room, while, inside, he and Kaladin were lamenting about Roshone. Lirin confronted the men, who demanded that Lirin hand over Wistiow's spheres. Lirin, unfazed, uncovered the [[Stormlight|light]] of the spheres, exposing the intruders to be not highwaymen like Kaladin had thought, but members of the town; [[Luten]], [[Horl]], and [[Balsas]], and dared them to take the spheres. Not expecting to find anyone inside, the men left without taking the spheres when confronted.{{book ref|sa1|31}}

During the conversation, Kaladin refusesrealized andLirin argueshad withindeed Rillirstolen the spheres from Wistiow. Kaladin resolved to use the spheres for his training, but endsstated uphe humiliatedwould whilepay them back to Laral doesone nothingday. He told his father he wanted to helpgo Kaladinby his full name, instead of "Kal," from then on.{{book ref|sa1|37}}
 
As they leave the mansion, Kaladin realizes that his father had, in fact, stolen the spheres from Wistiow. Lirin claims that the spheres were promised to Kaladin and Wistiow would have given them the spheres if he were lucid. Kaladin is humiliated and angry at the experience and his discriminatory treatment by the lighteyes. Though Kaladin is darkeyed, he desperately wants to be acknowledged as an equal from the lighteyes. Kaladin asks his father to call him by his full name instead of his nickname "Kal", finally embracing his lighteyed-sounding name and the dual nature it implies. Kaladin resolves to become a surgeon, even if he has to use stolen spheres, although he would repay Laral eventually.{{book ref|sa1|37}}
 
Some time later, Roshone and Rillir were brought to Lirin's surgery room with serious injuries that they had sustained while hunting [[whitespine]]. Kaladin pushed past the screaming Laral and entered the surgery room to help his father. They quickly assessed that Rillir was beyond their help and, despite the Brightlord's protest, started working on the older man's wounds. They anesthetized both the father and son with [[dazewater]], because it was the only mercy they had to offer Rillir. There was an instant where Lirin could have killed Roshone and got away with it by cutting the femoral artery of the already bleeding man, and both Lirin and Kaladin considered it. However, Lirin looked at his son's eyes and went on to saving Roshone as Rillir died. That evening, Kaladin asked why his father hadn't let Roshone die. Lirin answered that it would be murdering Roshone and that he wasn't a killer. He said the lighteyes didn't care about life, so he must. As Kaladin considered his father's words, he realized he would have killed Roshone if he were in Lirin's place.{{book ref|sa1|41}} The next day, Lirin spent one of the spheres from Kaladin's education money for the first time.{{book ref|sa1|44}}
