A few months after the Battle of Thaylen Field, Lopen and Huio were chosen by [[Kaladin]] to join athe Thaylen [[expedition to AimiaAkinah]] aboard the [[Wandersail (1174 ship)|Wandersail]] as they were the only Windrunners capable of swimming.{{book ref|sa3.5|4}} Huio is said to spend the early portions of the trip assisting the crew with shipboard duties.{{book ref|sa3.5|5} Because Huio struggles with Alethi, Lopen frequently pulls his cousin into conversations to translate jokes. Huio is seen tinkering with Rushu's spanreen and the aluminum foil - an activity that ultimately results in the discovery of aluminum-modified [[fabrial]]s.{{book ref|sa3.5|8}} He also seems to have some sense for the behavior of the spren trapped in the fabrial and the implications of aluminum, although it is unclear if this is his own knowledge or if it is related to his bond with [[Caelinora]].
After discovery of [[Nikli]]'s plot to saboutage the expedition, Lopen and Huio are tasked with flying it to shore for incarceration.{{book ref|sa3.5|10}}
