Only a few months before the greatshell hunt,{{book ref|sa1|12}} he became the King's Wit, [[Elhokar Kholin]]'s court jester. Through this role he influences [[Dalinar]], going so far as to ask Dalinar if he has ever heard the term "Adonalsium", as he believed that he was involved in secret societies such as the [[Sons of Honor]], and thought that Gavilar confided in him. It is also likely that he used his [[Yolish Lightweaving]] to cause the smoke from the fire to take the form of various elements from his story.
