Hoid was offered a Shard at the time of the Shattering, but refused to take it.{{wob ref|3337}}{{epigraph ref|sa3|38}}{{epigraph ref|sa3|41}}{{book ref|sa4|99}} He also did something in his past that he regretted.{{wob ref|8225}}
He made some sort of oath with the Shards, which left the unable to directly bring him harm. Though loopholes do exist in the oath they made.{{book ref|sa4|epilogue}}
