Before sinking [[Oot's Dream]], Crow had not previously gained any plunder, as she describes the cup obtained from [[Smocke]]'s ship as her first. {{book ref|tress|35}} This implies that the crew, which was together before picking up Tress, used to be a merchant vessel.
Crow becomes captain of [[Crow's Song]] and convinces the crew to turn to piracy as an alternative to participating in the King's war against the Sorceress. In collusion with [[Laggart]], she plans to cross the line from piracy (for tribute) to deadrunning (extirpation) which will make the entire crew into outlaws among outlaws. Though [[Tress]] foils this plan, Crow conserves her with the plan to exchange Tress' services to [[Xisisrefliel]] for Crow being healed from spore eating.
