It seems the "fled from the evil" is a modern misconception, the Chorus say they just fled infighting. Fleeing from the Evil also wouldn't make sense with the timeline, it is implied that they weren't on Canticle for that long, and the Evil appeared over 7700 standard years before the True Desolation. So, I feel we should just say it is the infighting, like the Chorus claims.
