In 1173, after Bussik's [[bridge crew]] loseslost two-thirds of its members in a bridge run, he triestried to convince [[Gaz]] that his crew iswas too weak to work on stone-gathering detail.{{book ref|sa1|21}} [[Kaladin]] suggestssuggested that [[Bridge Four]] be assigned to stone-gathering duty instead; Gaz agreesagreed with him, and givesgave Bussik and Bridge Three the job of cleaning pots. [[Rock]] correctly predictspredicted that being volunteered for stone-gathering willwould annoy the other members of Bridge Four, but Kaladin hashad the ulterior motive of simultaneously gathering [[knobweed|knobweed sap]].{{book ref|sa1|21}}{{book ref|sa1|23}}

Bussik showsshowed anger towards Kaladin and Bridge Four, causing Kaladin to realize that most of the other bridge crews arewere becoming vexed by Bridge Four's sudden ability to make bridge runs with minimal losses, when they had previously been the crew where people were sent to die.{{book ref|sa1|21}} Kaladin later realized that he was unconsciously protecting Bridge Four with to his nascent [[Surgebind]]ing abilities.{{book ref|sa1|62}}
