Adien was taken by the [[Shaod]] five years before the events of the book. Instead of sending him to [[Elantris]], his family hid his affliction with makeup. Adien instinctively knows the distance from one place to another, ~~through~~measuring them with the length of his stride. Throughout his life, people believed him simple in the head due to his constant ~~mumblings~~mumbling ofabout distances and ~~distance~~sleeping.
