Adien was taken by the [[Shaod]] five years before the events of the book. Instead of sending him to [[Elantris]], his family hid his affliction with makeup.
Adien instinctively knows the distance from one place to another, through the length of his stride. Throughout his life, people believed him simple in the head due to his constant mumblings of distance.
