In his early teens, five years before Raoden heals Elantris, Adien was taken by the [[Shaod]].{{book ref|b|Elantris|c|60}} Unwilling to have him thrown into [[Elantris (city)|the city]], his family concealed Adien's condition with makeup{{book ref|b|Elantris|epilogue}} and kept him close to home. The makeup gave Adien a pale white complexion with a strange cast to his face.{{book ref|b|Elantris|c|5}} Because of his new condition, Adien spent much of his time sleeping.{{book ref|b|Elantris|c|5}} With his family's help, Adien accomplished the unprecedented feat of staving off becoming [[Hoed]] for those five years.

Roughly five years before Raoden heals Elantris, Adien was a thin-faced boy in his late-teens.{{book ref|b|Elantris|c|5}} After [[Raoden]] healed Elantris, Adien gave him the exact distance to [[Teod]] so that Raoden could effectively use [[Aon#Tia|Aon Tia]] to rescue Sarene.
